Cheap design is
too expensive

…when it doesn’t do it’s job. We’ve all been there; we see that thing we want or need, and then we find it for a fraction of the price — what a deal! But then victory turns to defeat when the product never shows up, or turns out to be less authentic or functional than we had hoped. The high cost of cheap design often grows in secret: you pay for business cards, websites, posters, billboards, digital ads, car wraps… and then you slowly grow to realize that your design is not doing what you had hoped; it’s actually holding you back, rather than propelling your brand and attracting customers.

The psychology behind
Design Theory

As a Graphic Designer, I can’t help but evaluate every design I see. I constantly think about the psychology behind color choices, the personality of the fonts used, the balance of visual weight and negative space… and whether the brand I’m looking at is getting the most bang for their buck: is it cohesive, and is it working? The branding at the first company I designed for after college literally had the company name and primary product in the logo, but what it actually said was “we don’t care about your business and we’re not interested in keeping up with advancements in our industry.” All but one revenue stream in that company required customers to write information by hand, and everything the customers touched was little more than an unbranded excel spreadsheet. I pitched a branding update and redesigned forms, both of which were rebuffed at the time. After I left, I saw the business stagnate and lose a lot of its customers to out-of-state competitors. Years later, they implemented the changes I had pitched, utilizing files I had left behind. Today that company is thriving, and has cited my work as playing a pivotal role.
I’ve since designed successful branding projects for nearly one hundred different organizations, ranging from manufacturing & fabrication to entrepreneurial investment & lifestyle, wellness shops, non-profits, museums, retailers, and so many more.

“a job well done
is twice done.”

This maxim was drilled into me as a child because I was so intent on getting things done as quickly as possible, with the least effort. It meant that if I insisted on investing the least possible effort into the task at hand, I’d have to redo the task, and “twice” usually turned out to be a conservative estimate.

Now as a professional and business owner, I see it everywhere: we all think we can save money because of a smaller price tag, but end up paying that price over and over, as the cheaper service fails to perform and the free webinar turns out to be little more than a 90-minute sales pitch.
What is true cost of poor design? $7 designs that go on $1,500 of storefront signage and makes you look generic or silly turns into $1,5007 wasted dollars, or worse; becomes $1,500 working against you! How many times can you rinse and repeat your branding poorly without your brand losing all credibility?
